The 9 best places for Veganuary in London

With sustainability and healthy eating two of 2020’s biggest talking points, we’ve put together some of the best Veganuary menus to try out at London’s Regent’s Place – from delicious brunches to Yasai rolls, bring some colour and joy into your January 2020. 

Burgers and dips but not as you know them

Famous for its welcoming vibe and brilliant staff, The Union Regent’s Place has transformed the humble patty into a thing of vegan wonder with a beetroot and oyster mushroom burger, onion, tomato, lettuce, pickle and vegan mayonnaise. Plus, they’ve got starters of Italian hummus (white bean and harissa, with pickled shimeji mushrooms and grilled pita bread) and Matbucha salad (spicy Moroccan red pepper and tomato salad, root vegetable fritters and parsley oil). 

Insider’s take: “I've just spent the afternoon in this hidden gem, only five minutes’ walk from Warren Street Station... lovely food, lovely atmosphere... Highly recommended for business and meetings. Great value! Thank you to the lovely staff for being so hospitable.” Tripadvisor

Relax over a seriously good brunch

Head to Beany Green from 8am-4pm weekdays for their incredible bottomless brunches. For 100 minutes with unlimited prosecco and mimosas, you can enjoy some of the best vegan breakfasts in the city. Serving up scrambled tofu with their mains, choose from plates such as the Healthy start – celeriac toast, avocado, poached eggs, broccoli and grilled tomatoes – or House maple (granola, vegan coconut yogurt, fresh berries and coconut).

Lunches with your name on them

Itsu is a go-to for vegan lunches: you have to try the kibbled rye wrap stuffed full of organic quinoa, nori, avocado, shredded carrot, greens, mint and gochujang chilli sauce as well as the detox greens (a box filled with shirataki noodles made from the konjac plant), avocado, broccoli, tofu in ginger teriyaki dressing and garnished with toasted pumpkin and sunflower seeds. Not to mention their avo rolls, veg and seeds dragon roll and crushed coconut and chocolate oishii bars make for excellent snacking too. 

Insider’s take: “Amazing restaurant. Very casual but with incredible tasting food. Fresh everyday and very healthy. Excellent for that quick lunch stop. Desserts are also healthy and staff are very helpful.” Tripadvisor

Italian comfort food

It’s cold, it’s dark and the next break is a long way off but Nuvola is just place when you need some winter cheer. Go for a winter veggie hot box (winter veg with butternut squash, sweet potatoes, chickpeas and leeks) or colourful salads that’ll make you feel good about things (we recommend the quinoa with roasted beetroot, kale, rocket, avocado and sunflower seeds with lemon dressing). 

Insider’s take: “I am a regular customer and a bit fussy! The team go out of their way to cater for my dietary needs. Thank you! Apart from the pasta dishes, they have great assortment of cakes, just like mum would make :-) and also savoury treats for those that don't have a sweet tooth. Try their vegan croissants. (It can get busy at lunch times, which is logical as they are popular!)” Tripadvisor

The vegan faithful 

Pret are champions of Veganuary with seasonal specials to make things that bit easier. All of the veggie soups are vegan (our favourite is the butternut squash dhansak with green lentils, mung beans and yellow split peas spiced with turmeric, coriander and cumin with hit of chilli) while the super greens and reds wrap has slices of avocado covered with tapenade made of roasted red peppers and cherry tomatoes mixed with crunchy red pepper, kalamata olives and spinach. Insider’s take: “As a vegan, it's so nice being able to go into a sandwich chain with more than one tired falafel and hummus option… the choice and variety of sandwiches and salads is great.” Google Reviews

The special January offer you can’t refuse

The Refinery are making the month brighter with two mains and two drinks for £20 (thank you!). Plus, they have two vegan options on the menu (two!): butternut squash risotto with sage and a sprout salad full of daikon, lentils, chickpeas, radish and baby spinach. We’ll raise a glass (of the Ochagavia Sauvignon Blanc) to that. On the main menu they also do a mean vegan grain bowl with quinoa, wild rice, chia seeds, avocado, garden vegetables and vegan herb mayonnaise.

Insider’s take: “The menu is well catered for vegans and they change items from time to time. I had a chocolate and orange polenta cake (if I remember well) and months later I had an apple and sorbet cake.” Tripadvisor

The sustainable choice

The Triton Cafe has a commitment to sustainability using local suppliers and repurposed furniture. Alongside this they’re all about the friendly welcome with coffees (soya, almond, coconut, oat and 25p discount on reusable cups) and a salad bar of green leaves, grains and seeds.

The helpful menu

Pod is known for their incredibly good salads, wraps and, crucially, breakfasts. Plus, if you pop along to the website, they’ve handily added a vegan filter to the menu so you can see at a glance what’s on offer. For breakfast, we’d recommend gluten free oats topped with crunchy Pip ’n’ Nut peanut butter and five berry compote – plus it’s made with oat milk and for hot lunches, the organic tofu pho served on thick flat rice noodles with crunchy green veg, coriander and mint in a light broth. 

Insider’s take: “This is one of my favourite takeaway lunchtime spots. The food is healthy and delicious. The menu is always changing so you can always get yummy new stuff. They have a great loyalty card system.” Tripadvisor

The incredibly healthy suggestion

Fancy marinated fried tofu with teriyaki sauce with brown sushi rice, sesame oil, avocado, red cabbage, roasted butternut squash, edamame, cucumber, sesame seeds and spring onions? Wasabi is the perfect place to up your colourful eating and get a tasty hit too. There’s also sweet chilli tofu bento and the Yasai roll set which has inari, carrot, avocado, cucumber and red pepper. Eat well! 

Insider’s take: “Good for a fast lunch. The hot food is generously portioned, fresh and not too expensive. Best of all, everything is labelled so vegans and vegetarians can easily see the options (and there are a few).” Tripadvisor
